Organising your home isn’t rocket science. However, not many think about how to organise your household to reassess all the stuff you’ve accumulated over the years.
It’s so beneficial to organise your house. From finding things quickly and easily to feeling in control of your stuff (versus the other way around), sometimes all we need is a simple reminder on how to start.
Here, we’re going over how to organise your household in 3 easy steps. These aren’t groundbreaking ideas, but they work. So, without further ado, let’s begin.
Before you organise your home, you need to do some de-cluttering. You might be tempted to skip this step, but it’s crucial to better home organisation.
Go room by room, perhaps only doing one area of your home at a time, and take everything out of the closets, drawers and cabinets. From there, you’ll separate everything you plan to keep, everything you plan to donate or get rid of, and everything you’re unsure what to do with.
A good rule of thumb when deciding whether to keep something or get rid of it is to think about whether you’ve used that particular item in the last six months. If you haven’t, it’s probably a sign that you don’t really need it.
However, there are things you should keep like winter jackets and bathing suits that you may not have used recently but will come in handy on a seasonal basis. Sentimental items are ok to keep as well. Just remember, your memories aren’t necessarily stored in those things. Still, you can decide what’s worth it to hold onto and what will feel good to let go of.
The point is, if you haven’t needed it in the last six months, you probably won’t need it in the next six months. It’s better to clear out your space as much as possible instead of holding onto items that you might need down the track.
Keep in mind, the de-cluttering process can be overwhelming. You don’t need to become a minimalist to make space in your home. Instead, this organisation technique should help you to feel lighter and more in control of the stuff in your home. It’s the first step toward better home organisation.
Get Your Organisation Tools
Once you know what you want to keep and what you’re ready to release, you’ll need some organisation tools to make your home organisation that much better.
In the kitchen, you might start to use Eco Lids that fit almost any container in order to get rid of your Tupperware and save space. These environmentally-friendly lids are stretchy and secure to make sure your leftovers stay fresh without transferring the food to a different container from the one you were eating from. It saves you from doing extra dishes too!
For your bathroom, perhaps you’ll install some Razor Wall Hooks or grab some new storage boxes to use under the sink. With your bathroom bench clear, it’ll be easier and more enjoyable to use your bathroom.
The organisation tools you’ll use when you figure out how to organise your household will depend on your specific needs. So, have a look at what’s out there and decide what might work best for you.
Last but not least, it’s time to re-organise. There’s not just one way to organise your home. Again, it’ll depend on your particular circumstances.
However, a few organisation tips include:
Organising by category (hair products, skincare, cleaning products)
Organising by use (baking goods, soups and canned goods, kid’s snacks)
Organising by colour (great for closets and drawers)
Re-organising means you’re giving everything in your house a specific home. You’ll find things easier and feel calmer knowing everything is where it should be.
When you make time every year to de-clutter, get new organisational tools, and find ways to re-organise that works for you, it’s easy to keep your entire home tidy and functional.
